Sacred Spaces - Delicious Self-Care, Mini Series, Part 2

Here is Part 2 of the mini-series, 'Delicious Self Care', courtesy of my talented and extra-awesome friend, Stacy! If you missed Part 1, check it out here: Let's Trade the Word 'Busy' for 'Living'.

I am a working mother of three, married to my high school sweetheart. We live in a delightful 1960s ranch that resembles a creative and cozy home on some days, and then a ransacked yurt on others! Despite our best attempts to keep things tidy, honestly...there are weeks when we give up entirely and choose to LEAVE the house versus TIDY it.

The kids have their own 'office spaces' as they share a bunk room with no room for their treasures. My husband has a desk area.

I have never had my own personal space that was permanent. I have had a lot of quasi-permanent spaces that always seem to fill with clutter that isn't mine, and soon after vanishes as if it were a figment of my imagination.

We need our own space.

We need the things that we love to look at close by.

We need our own cords for technology that no one can steal.

We need our own roll of stamps.

And stationary.

And journals.

And a place that people leave alone.

We need sacredness.

For me, my sacred space consists of an intentional list of things in a bag. It isn't that I have given up on creating a permanent space in our home for 'mom', but I travel and, frankly, my desires for a sacred space change over time.

So, I have created sacredness in the items that I always have with me: a current journal, a back-up journal, a book, a baggie of colorful markers, fresh sharpies, paper, stamps, my homemade lavender body & home spray, and I am never far from candles.

Just this morning, I set up my 'sacred-operation' at the kitchen table with my 9-year old. He helped me light eight different candles. Then he watched Netflix as I embraced my sacred space. We relished being the only ones home and both fire bugs. Two hours later, I packed it all up for the next sacred moment.

We owe it to ourselves to have a space (or spaces) that bring out the best in us. For some of us, that may mean curling up with an awesome lap top to organize digital photos. For others, it is all about unplugging.

Frankly, it doesn't matter WHAT the space provokes, other than you should be a better person after leaving it.

Cheers to living a delicious life!

My almost 6 year old daughter took this picture of me, hence the unappealing camera angle.  But this is how she sees me, so even though it's not the most glamorous picture, it works.  This is me.
